Vision & Goals for DC Schools

There is more to be done to ensure that all students receive an excellent education. Together, city leaders must:

  • Increase the number of students who graduate DC schools prepared to pursue further education or enter into meaningful careers;
  • Ensure every child has qualified teachers and principals;
  • Reduce the dropout rate by ensuring all our schools are delivering on their promise of a well rounded curriculum;
  • Establish a system-wide culture of effective management and accountability;
  • Implement the Common Core Standards and collaborate across states to develop tools for economies of scale;
  • Redouble our commitment to career and technical education;
  • Continue to grow our postsecondary options by supporting the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and the Community College of DC (CCDC);
  • Increase access to pre-kindergarten and early childhood education programs so students enter school ready to learn;
  • Support the arts in K-12 education and make sure all students have access;
  • Increase foreign language offerings in grades K-8 to lay a foundation for global awareness;
  • Continue to engage parents and the community through public hearings and community forums.
