News Release: DC State Board public hearing on proposed teacher certification regulations

Laura Slover and the other members of the DC State Board of Education held a public hearing concerning proposed regulations governing teacher certification on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. The proposed regulations are available on the website of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (www.osse.dc.gov).

The hearing reviewed proposed revisions of teacher certification requirements, which would include effectiveness as a component of an advanced certification.

According to Slover, beginning a dialogue regarding teacher effectiveness is especially important for area public and charter schools, adding that “effective teachers are the single most important element of a successful education system.”

Additionally, the hearing provided an opportunity for public comment on the proposed requirements. The draft requirements will be available for public comment for 30 days starting August 1st.
